Ammonia in its commercial form is commonly called “anhydrous ammonia”. Ammonia is a pungent, colorless gas. In liquid form, it is a colorless gas as a result of compression and cooling. As a chemical compound, it is very stable and highly associated. Disassociation only begins to occur at 840- 900 F. Ammonia is a highly reactive chemical forming ammonium salts in reactions to inorganic and organic acids. Ammonia is not a cumulative metabolic position; its ions are actually important constituents of living beings. However, the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes, lungs and throat can experience intense irritating effects when exposed to atmosphere where this gas is present. At high levels, ammonia can cause corrosive effects on tissues and can cause bronchial and laryngeal spasms and edema which can obstruct breathing.
