Carbon monoxide is a flammable and toxic gas that exhibits no odor or color. Any concentrations 4% or higher will be fatal in less than an hour if inhaled. If high concentrations are present, inhalation can cause a sudden collapse with little or no warning. Impure carbon monoxide that contains sulfur compounds, water vapor and/or other reactive impurities will cause stress corrosion to many metals at higher pressures. However, pure carbon monoxide has very little corrosive effect on metals at atmospheric pressures. This gas is a chemical asphyxiant. It will overpower the hemoglobin of the red blood cells to form the stable compound monoxide-hemoglobin. Carbon monoxide can be fatal and will give no warning of its presence as it is colorless and odorless.
