Chlorine is a nonflammable, greenish-yellow colored gas with a distinctive, pungent odor. Chlorine liquid is about half as heavy as water and has a clear amber color. In both gaseous and liquid states, Chlorine is nonexplosive and nonflammable. Although, similar to oxygen, it is capable of supporting the combustion of specific substances. Chlorine in gas form is primarily a respiratory irritant. The gas has such an intensely irritating effect that small amounts in the air are readily detectable by a normal person. At higher concentrations, unless the person is unconscious or trapped, it is unlikely a person will be able remain in a chlorine filled area. In liquid form, it will result in skin and eye burns on contact.
