Ethane is an odorless, flammable colorless gas that is considered nontoxic and relatively inactive chemically. Ethane is an asphyxiant. These effects are due to lack of oxygen. Moderate concentrations may cause headache, drowsiness, dizziness, excitation, excess salivation, nausea, vomiting, and unconsciousness. Overexposure can lead to dermatitis and in extreeme cases it may cause arrhythmias or arrest due to sensitization of the heart to adrenaline and noradrenaline. Lack of oxygen can kill.
