Methane is a tasteless, odorless, colorless flammable gas. It is soluble in ether or alcohol, and only slightly soluble in water. Methane is present to an extent in coal mines and is a major constituent of coal gas. The gas is generally considered nontoxic. For example, coal miners breathe concentrations up to 9% without any ill effects. Higher concentrations, if inhaled, can cause a feeling of pressure on the eyes and forehead. This sensation ceases after returning to fresh air. Methane can still function as a simple asphyxiant, displacing oxygen in the air.
