Sulfur Dioxide is also known as Sulfurous Acid Anhydride. It is a colorless, nonflammable gas that has a strong pungent smell that is highly irritating at room temperatures. Sulfur Dioxide is a fantastic reducing and oxidizing agent in aqueous solutions. When dry, it is not corrosive to ordinary metals. If Sulfur Dioxide is dissolved in water, it will form sulfurous acid. This acid is unstable in heat and soluble amounts of Sulfur Dioxide decrease as temperature increases. The highly irritating odor can affect the upper respiratory tract and also the lower system as well.
